High Impact / Pressure Polyethylene Pipe

In order to improve the protection of steel pipes against external corrosion when buried underground or submerged in water, researchers for the Solvay S.A. worldwide group have developed a new type of three layer coating system possessing high mechanical properties. This system removes the temperature limitations of traditional PE systems and allows higher performance levels.

The new system

The new system is designed in the same way as traditional three layer coating systems. The difference is in the careful choice of component materials which makes these higher performance levels possible.

A Synergy of Performances

Components:

  • an epoxy resin optimized for this application - for optimal adhesion to steel, resistance to corrosion,...
  • a "high performance" adhesive - excellent mechanical properties even at high temperatures, resistance to thermal aging, high compatibility with epoxy resi and  MDPE/HDPE,...
  • a MDPE/HDPE developed for this application - easy processing, strong mechanical properties at high temperatures, excellent thermal and UV stability, high stress-cracking resistance.

The results are:

  • high compatibility between component materials - achieving performances previously inaccessible to PE systems
  • exceptional thermal stability - helping to ensure long term coating properties
  • high mechanical properties - helping to avoid damage to the coating during storage, transport and laying

These improved performances open the way for the new three layer system to be used where working temperatures are higher than those normally accessible to traditional PE systems, while still maintaining their well known advantages.
